On Temptation and the Mortification of Sin in Believers edition by John Owen J I Packer Religion Spirituality eBooks

This John Owen's classic book, originally published as two separate works, "On the Mortification of Sin in Believers" published in 1656 and "Of Temptation" in 1658, includes now J. I. Packer's introduction to John Owen and his works. In this historic work, John Owen challenges his readers how one should know and regard the nature and the power of sin and temptation in the life of the believer, so it has been and still is impactful for many believers.
"Owen embodied all that was noblest in Puritain devotion. "Holiness," said his junior colleague David Clarkson in the sermon preached at Owen's burial, "gave a divine lustre to his other accomplishments." He was humble. "There are two things that are suited to humble the souls of men," he wrote, ". . . a due consideration of God, and then of ourselves. Of God, his His greatness, glory, holiness, power, majesty, and authority; of ourselves, in our mean, abject, and sinful condition." The latter is important, for "the man that understands the evil of his own heart, how vile it is, is the only useful, fruitful, and solidly believing and obedient person" (Works, 200-201).

Great book dealing with something not taught often enough on Sunday morning. Written in understandable language with some Old English tones. Nothing that can't be overcome. Subject hits home so well, it appears to have been written specifically for the reader. If you don't think that you have a constant battle with indwelling sin, it's time to wake up and read this book. This is more specific than Lungaard's "Enemy Within", which makes it a good companion book to Lundgaard's modern rendering.Product details

On Temptation and the Mortification of Sin in Believers edition by John Owen J I Packer Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Owen has a piercing understanding of the human heart and its sinfulness. The overwhelming majority of this work deals with understanding sin, the power of sin, our adversary the Devil, the nature of temptation and the allure of evil. Expect to be cut (and cut deep) when you read this book. For anyone who has ever cried with Paul, "Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?" (Romans 724), this book will expose the bone and marrow of your inner depravity and leave you with only one recourse--the grace of God in Jesus Christ.
Owen deals only briefly with the actual practice of mortification (ie. destruction of sin), but his advice is to-the-point and very profound. He offers only two suggestions look to Christ & seek the Holy Spirit.
Owen's book is virtually an exposition of Romans 7 and Galatians 5. I would recommend Martin Luther's commentary on Galatians as a follow-up to this book. While Owen will expose the sinfulness of your heart, Luther will lift up the righteousness of the Savior Jesus Christ. (And do not be decieved, the first is as necessary as the second).
This book is most highly recommended--both to those who have a deep sense of their own sinfulness and those who have no sense of sin at all.
The book is very good, and in great shape. Received it in great time.
Great product and tremendous service from the seller.
This edition is very difficult to read because it contains too many computer-generated OCR mistakes which were not corrected. I would suggest a different edition.
Fantastic book!!!! Well written. Very thought provoking.
A different perspective, study and learn, and see what God has in store for you.
I have long been confused about my part in my Christian life. It is God who works obedience in me but how am I "doing". What does that look like. This book explains the power of indwelling sin and teaches me to cherish God's provisions of grace that are my weapons in fighting against the "imaginations" that rise up in my mind that persuade me to "follow my heart" instead of obey Christ. I have a new understanding of myself and a new respect for the power of scripture and prayer in the life of the believer. They are not just acts one does. They are weapons of the Spirit against the self deception of the flesh.
